For the true beginner, this class is not intimidating and will help you learn some of the first tricks to drawing what you see. We go through it step by step and encourage each student to explore their own style and their own interests. We work from photographs and from real life and cover perspective, shading, line quality and more.

Wednesday Night Drawing Club (10-15yrs)

Kids and teens ages 10-15yrs can join us from 7-8:30pm on Wednesday nights to hang out, draw, chat and maybe even learn a little from each other. The goal of the club is to provide a space for kids and teens who like to draw to hang out, practice some of their drawing skills and be challenged by themselves and their peers.

It’s always a fun time so bring your friends and your sketchbook and just draw for the fun of it!

Morning Mandalas with Mom

Looking for a way to connect with mom this Mother’s Day weekend?  Try something new?  Enjoy some down time together?

Join us for some relaxing and fun Mandala drawing!  We’re opening the studio for families to drop in and learn how to draw Mandalas.

Date:  Saturday, May 12

Time:  Drop in anytime between 10:00am and 1:00pm

Location:  Playful Pencil Art Studio, 2325 Central Ave

Cost:  $15 per family for about an hour of studio time

Who to bring?  Your mom!  Your grandma!  Your aunt!  Your sister!  Any moms in your life!

What to bring?  Yourselves and some curiosity and creativity – we’ll provide the rest.

Who’s it for?  This activity is best for children 6+ years, but all are welcome.

Our Summer Camp schedule is now available and ready for registration.  We will take on all kinds of drawing and doodling art projects with three themes to choose from:  Drawing Comics & Cartoons, Drawing & Art Making and Nature Drawing & Journaling.  Plus with all of the camps we’ll get outdoors each day to visit our local parks and beaches.

Each day we’ll work with a theme playing with different mediums to create a variety of 2D and 3D projects. We’ll practice basic drawing techniques and participants will have the opportunity to explore their own unique style and get creative with it.

Each day participants will explore a theme through their nature journals.   We’ll visit local parks and beaches working on basic drawing techniques and learning how to sketch landscapes, plants and animals adding colour to our sketches through watercolour paints, pencil crayons and markers.

Sunday Morning Urban Sketching

You can capture the world around you with a sketchbook and a couple of pens!  Sue will introduce you to the wonderful pastime of urban sketching through in-class instruction and sketch time.

Class exercises and demos will cover sketching basics such as tools and techniques, composition, perspective, the use of texture and tone. And in 4 weeks you will have a good foundation to further develop your own personal, visual narrative of the world.

About Sue Macartney

Sue was born in a remote coastal community in British Columbia and since early childhood has been on the move, living in East and West Africa, the Caribbean, France, Central Canada, Japan, India and Scandinavia. She got an MA in Anthropology from McMaster University, Hamilton.  Later, returning to her artistic roots, she studied graphic design, graduating from Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology in 1990. She has worked both as a freelance graphic designer and as a children’s art teacher.  Sue developed and taught art programs in Ottawa public schools and community centres and also worked as a primary art specialist at Stockholm International School.

Sue likes working in a wide range of media and particularly enjoys ink/pencil drawing and collage. Recently, her lifelong passion for drawing and story telling has led her to the world of children’s writing and illustration.  You can see samples of her current work at:
