Digital Portrait Painting with Anson Wong

Digital Portrait Painting with Anson Wong

September 4, 2019

Anson is a digital artist from Victoria, British Columbia currently studying both Visual Arts and Computer Science at the University of Victoria. On the rare occasion that he’s not glued to his drawing tablet, you can find Anson hiking in the woods or soaking up some sun at the beach. His work mainly consists of digitally painted portraits and character art (see some examples below). Anson hopes to work in the entertainment industry once he’s done school, doing designs for films and games.

In Anson’s Digital Portrait Painting class you’ll learn the essentials of working in a digital environment through portrait painting. Each lesson will have a follow-along demo on a facial feature, followed by exercises in which we’ll practice the material using different techniques. You’ll learn the digital painting process and how to paint the entire head. This class is designed for those who have a foundation in traditional mediums and portraits and are looking to learn digital painting.

This class is BYOD (bring your own device).  Anson has listed some options below.  If you have something that you think might work, but want to check before registering, contact Jodi and we’ll let you know if it will work for this class.

  • If you already have something that you use for digital painting, then you’re all set! Anything that is portable enough to bring to class and can run Autodesk Sketchbook decently and supports pressure sensitive styluses / tablets will likely do just fine.
  • If you have a laptop, you can pair it with a tablet like the Huion H610 Pro, Huion HS610 or the Wacom Intuos.
  • If you have a touch-screen laptop like the Microsoft Surface Pro / Go or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 / S4, then you can pair it with a tablet or just use a Surface Pen or Samsung S-Pen by themselves.
  • If you have an iPad 6 / Air 3 / mini 5 / Pro then all you’ll need is the Apple Pencil. The first generation pencil will work with all the iPad models listed, and the second generation will only work with the larger Pro models.
